Module 02 · Auditing

Seven stages.One engagement.

An audit runs in a fixed order, and so does the module. Here is what happens at each stage — what George prepares, and what stays with you. Where the accounting module is on, the file reads straight from the ledger.

An audit engagement,
end to end.

Seven stages, in the order an audit actually runs. Each one names what happens inside it, what George is allowed to touch, and whether it works in the product today.

Engagement · Planning · Risk · Execution · Review · Close-out · Reporting

Stage 1 of 7

Initiation.

Before any work, the ground rules.

  • client, scope and independence checks confirmed
  • the team assigned, and who reviews whom
  • last year's file linked, so nothing starts from zero
  • the client and engagement hierarchy this sits in is in development

Stage 2 of 7

Planning.

Last year's thinking, carried forward.

  • materiality and performance materiality set
  • prior-year planning rolled forward for review, not re-typed
  • the procedure list drawn from it

Stage 3 of 7

Risk.

The rating decides how hard you look.

  • risks identified and rated against the engagement
  • testing depth follows the rating
  • defining your own factors and weightings is in development

Stage 4 of 7

Execution.

George does the work, and shows it.

  • sample selected and stratified from the population
  • each item traced to contract, delivery note and remittance
  • exceptions flagged against materiality, conclusion drafted

Stage 5 of 7

Review.

Nothing is accepted until you accept it.

  • accept, edit or reject each drafted conclusion
  • a rejection is recorded with your reason, and George reworks from it
  • editing inside the procedure, and the sign-off history behind it, are in development

Stage 6 of 7

Close-out.

The file will not close while anything is open.

  • mandatory procedures, outstanding evidence and findings must clear
  • the incomplete items are named, not just counted
  • partner approval before the engagement closes

Stage 7 of 7

Reporting.

Every figure, back to the procedure that produced it.

  • findings cross-reference into the report
  • report versions kept, with what changed between them
  • references are produced after the audit today

Inside an engagement

Seven stages, sixty-seven procedures, one screen.

The workflow board is where the engagement actually lives. Every procedure carries its status, who is responsible, the risk that drove it, the evidence behind it and who still has to review it.

Day one

An empty engagement says so.

Nothing has been prepared, uploaded or signed off yet. Initiation comes first — client acceptance, independence and the engagement letter — and George only begins once that is signed off. On a first-year audit there is no prior year to roll forward, and the product says that too rather than showing an empty rollover.

The preparation log

Every exchange between George and the auditor, kept.

This is one workpaper. George works, explains what he found, and stops when he cannot conclude. The senior instructs him, he continues, she edits and approves. Nine months later the file still shows exactly who did which part.

Where the line sits

George does the work. The judgment stays yours.

George prepares

Recorded against his name, always reviewable.

  • Selects and stratifies the sample
  • Ties every item to its evidence
  • Tests controls and reperforms calculations
  • Flags exceptions against materiality
  • Drafts the conclusion
  • Keeps the activity trail current

You decide

Recorded against your name. Never delegated.

  • Set materiality
  • Judge whether a risk is significant
  • Accept, edit or reject every conclusion
  • Instruct George, and request more evidence
  • Assign and reassign the work
  • Sign the opinion
